The list of 2011 Triple Crown nominations has 13 classic hopefuls by Gainesway's Tapit. The two-time Champion Sire stallion is off to another superior start in 2011. With just three crops already racing, he currently ranks third among all North American sires, with the Grade 1 winning filly Zazu (Las Virgenes S.) his leading earner through the first six weeks of the year.
Here's a look at some of his Triple Crown hopefuls. Heading the list is Tapizar, who kicked off his road to the Triple Crown with a win in the 1 1/16 mile Sham S. (G3) on Jan. 15. Tapizar broke his maiden with an eye-popping 10 1/4-length victory at Churchill Downs on Nov. 27. He is based at Santa Anita with trainer Steve Asmussen, and is owned and bred by Tapit's owner Winchell Thoroughbreds.
Two-time stakes winner Bandbox accounted for the Charles Town Juvenile and Aqueduct's Sleepy Hollow S. as a 2-year-old. The gray/roan was bred in New York by New Dawn Thoroughbreds and Aron Yagoda. He is in training at Laurel Park with Rodney Jenkins.
Trainer Bob Baffert nominated the unraced colt Guy on the Go, who is working very well at Santa Anita and is a half-brother to two-time Grade 3 winner Social Queen. Baffert also has nominated Uncle Sam, who just got nosed out for third in the Sham; he broke his maiden Dec. 27 at Santa Anita. Uncle Sam was purchased for $210,000 by Kaleem Shah at the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale.
Rattlesnake Bridge turned in an impressive debut when he broke his maiden at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 12. The colt brought the second highest price at last year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-old sale, $450,000. He was bred in Kentucky by William Graves and Dennis Lynch.
Ronin Dax won an entry level allowance race at Santa Anita on Jan. 23. He was one of the top 20 sellers at the 2010 OBS February select 2-year-old sale. He is out of Fastandclever, a half-sister to Montreal Red, winner of the Futurity S. (G1), Saratoga Special S. (G2), and Sanford S. (G3).
Another unraced nominee is Tapaway, owned by Gainesway and trained by Steve Asmussen. The colt is a full brother to both Touching Beauty, winner of the Grade 3 Comely S., and the listed winner Noisy Feet. Gainesway bred Tapaway in partnership with Winchell Thoroughbreds.
