Multiple Graded stakes Smokey Fire scorched to his fourth stakes win, with a handy victory in the $100,000 Mt. Sassafras S. over the main track at Woodbine on Oct. 13.
The gray or roan, who won the Grade 2 Play the King Stakes over the lawn on Aug. 29, was heavily favored in this seven-furlong event. Smokey Fire tracked the pace-setter along the backstretch, moved to challenge on the turn, then took command with a furlong to go. He won with something left, in a final time of 1:22.65.
With the victory, Smokey Fire propelled his earnings to $559,950, from an ultra-consistent record of 13-7-3-1. He was bred in Ontario by Mel P. Lawson, and races for Jim Dandy Stable. He is a full or half brother to three other stakes horses, including 2010 stakes winner Utterly Cool ($357,622).
Champion Smoke Glacken is a Leading General Sire and Juvenile Sire this year. He has 12 stakes horses and progeny earnings in excess of $3,400,000, including Saratoga Grade 1 winner Persistently.
