Afleet Alex's great weekend got even better when his second crop daughter A Brilliant Idea took the $100,000 Junior Champion S. at Monmouth Park on Aug. 29. The day before, first-crop son Afleet Express represented his sire with a thrilling win in the $1 million Travers (G1) at Saratoga.

In the Junior Champion, run at a mile on the turf, A Brilliant Idea was in no hurry early after having to steady into the first turn. Garrett Gomez bided his time near the back of the nine-horse field until the far turn, when his filly moved up quickly when Gomez asked her. She gobbled up the ground down the stretch, blowing by the leaders to win by 2 1/2-lengths in 1:35.30.

A Brilliant Idea not only won her first stake, she also got her first career win after a pair of third-place finishes in maiden races. She earned $55,000 for the victory, upping her career total to $67,500.

A Brilliant Idea is trained by Kelly Breen for George and Lori Hall. The Halls purchased their filly from Gainesway's consignment to the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale. She is one of 19 stakes winners this year which were consigned by Gainesway.

Bred in Kentucky by Rutledge Farm & Hermen Greenberg, A Brilliant Idea is the first foal out of Rutledge Ballado. Afleet Alex is far and away America's Leading Second Crop Sire. His 2010 progeny earnings are  nearly $1-million ahead of the second place stallion, and his combined progeny earnings for 2009/2010 are nearly $800,000 ahead of the second-ranked stallion. Afleet Alex is also a leading juvenile sire of 2010, with 7 winners, three stakes horses from his second crop.

Champion and dual Classic winner in 2005, Afleet Alex has stood his entire career at Gainesway.
