First-time starter Commonwealth Rush, a 2-year-old colt by Afleet Alex, started off what could be a big weekend for his sire with a victory in his debut, a five-furlong maiden special weight at Belmont Park. The chestnut colt zipped through fractions of :21.59 and :45.16 while dueling with Sunday Splitsville. He kept to the task down the lane, eventually winning by a half-length in a final time of :58.50.

Commonwealth Rush was purchased for $90,000 this past March Fasig-Tipton Florida Select sale. He is third winner in as many foals out of his dam Wildcat Annie, who won Turfway's Gowell S.

Commonwealth Rush is trained by Tim Ice for Bluegrass Legacy Equine.

Afleet Alex is currently the leading second-crop sire in North America, with progeny earnings of $1,637,890. And the total could well grow after upcoming stakes action.

Saturday at Monmouth Park, the $200,000 Pegasus S. (G3) drew a field of six 3-year-olds, including a Afleet Again and Afleet Express. Afleet Express will draw plenty of attention after a dominating 7 3/4-length allowance win at Belmont Park last month. The $245,000 Keeneland January yearling is owned in partnership by Gainesway and Martin L. Cherry.

Afleet Again will be a force to be reckoned with as well. The gray or roan colt is owned by Cash Is King Stable, who also campaigned his sire. Afleet Again won the Grade 3 Withers on April 24.
