Afleet Alex continued his emergence as one of the nation's best young sires with another stellar year in 2010. The Gainesway stallion led all second-crop sires in terms of stakes winners, stakes wins, and average earnings per starter. He also was second overall in gross earnings, with $4,563,648, less than $21,000 shy of the top spot.
Following a brilliant racing career in which he was named champion 3-year-old colt with wins in the Preakness (G1), Belmont (G1), and Arkansas Derby (G2), plus wins in the Hopeful S. (G1), Champagne S. (G1), and Sanford S. (G2) as a juvenile, there were high hopes for Afleet Alex as a stallion. And he didn't disappoint, finishing 2009 ranked seventh among first crop sires.
The 2010 racing season was even better than the previous one. With 11 stakes winners accumulating a total of 13 black-type wins, Afleet Alex topped all second-crop sires in both categories. Leading the way was the 3-year-old colt Afleet Express, winner both the $1 million Travers S. (G1) and the Grade 3 Pegasus S. “Alex” actually had the sire “exacta” in the Pegasus, with Afleet Again taking the second spot. That colt also won the Grade 3 Withers S.
Afleet Express will join his sire in stud duties at Gainesway in 2011, where he will stand for $10,000 LFS&N.
Proving that he also can sire top-class fillies, Afleet Alex's daughter Cuqui's Love was a Group 2 winner in Puerto Rico, while in the States, the 3-year-old filly Harissa took the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks.
Besides his impressive list of stakes winners, Afleet Alex also led all sophomore sires in the average earnings per starter category. His total of $67,112 far out-distanced the runner-up's number of $51,510.
Afleet Alex was bred to a full book of 150 mares in 2010 and his continuing popularity in the breeding shed will have him with another full group of top-quality matings in 2011. His fee for this year is $25,000 LFS&N.
