Leading Second-Crop Sire Afleet Alex was represented by one of the top lots at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Selected Yearlings Sale, when a bay colt selling as Hip No. 142 fetched $750,000 on Day 2 Tuesday.
Consigned by Gainesway Sales for breeder Gulf Coast Farms, the attractive colt took heavy action quickly from top buyers upon entering the ring. The hammer fell on the final bid from internationally-renowned bloodstock agent John Ferguson, who purchased the colt on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed.
“He was a really outstanding individual, really athletic,” Ferguson said. “He's got a great body on him and a great pedigree. We're delighted to have him. It's very hard to produce a horse that looks as good as him. He would be one of the outstanding individuals of the year. He was very athletic, with great shape. He just looks like a racehorse.”
The colt's pedigree is an elite one for the Classics, as he's by two-time Classic winner and Champion Afleet Alex, and out of the Belong to Me mare Private Feeling – dam of the Classic-winning Champion Lookin At Lucky and Grade 2-winning 3-year-old Kensei.
“$750,000 is a lot of money in this economy,” reflected Gainesway's Michael Hernon. “I thought it was a tremendous result in light of the current market. The colt was bought by the leading buyer in the world, and it's a great endorsement for Afleet Alex, who is now the leading second-crop sire in the nation.”
Gulf Coast’s Jerry Bailey said the Afleet Alex colt reminded him of his more famous half brothers. “I think he’s a runner. This horse has everything the other two have.”
Afleet Alex was the fifth leading sire at Saratoga by average ($450,000). He also sired Hip 111, a filly out of Miz United States, who sold for $150,000 to Seth Hancock.
