Afleet Again ran a sparkling mile and became his sire's fourth Graded stakes winner, in the $150,000 Withers S. (G3) at Aqueduct on Apr. 24. The eight-furlong stakes has been run since 1874, and just four colts, including Hall of Fame champion Dr. Fager, have ever run faster than Afleet Again, who sped home in 1:35.05. This was the first stakes victory for the 3-year-old Kentucky-bred colt, who was let go at 24-1. The final time of the race earned him a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 100.
The compact Withers field of five got away in good order, with Afleet Again just a length behind a very lively pace that went in :21 3/5 seconds for the first quarter-mile. Continuing down the long backstretch in the one-turn event, Afleet Again was eased back into the fourth spot before coming five wide near the top of the stretch. The six furlong mark of a torrid 1:07 2/5 took its toll on the frontrunners, and Afleet Again swooped to a lead he would never relinquish. The final margin was a widening length and a half.
The winner is owned by Cash is King Stable, who also campaigned dual-classic winner Afleet Alex. With the victory, Afleet Again is now 3-1-2 in ten lifetime starts. He has earned $177,950.
Afleet Alex reigns as Kentucky's Leading Second Crop Sire of 2010. Besides Afleet Again, he is the sire of 2010 Kentucky Derby (G1) contender Dublin, Grade 2 winner Cuqui's Love, Grade 3 winner Queen Afleet, and $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks winner Harissa.
