A pair of Afleet Alex colts pulled off a one-two finish in the $200,000 Pegasus S. (G3) on June 19. Afleet Express finished about two lengths in front of Afleet Again in the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds contested over Monmouth Park's fast main track.
Afleet Express was making his stakes debut, as well as his first start going around two turns. He was coming into the Pegasus off a dominating 7 3/4-length allowance win at Belmont Park last month. Afleet Again, on the other hand, has a win in the Grade 3 Withers S. on his resume.
The pair were right together for most of the race. Third and fourth for the first half-mile, Afleet Express was the first of the pair to go after the leaders. He went three-wide to move to the front, while Afleet Again was forced to go even wider on the turn. Afleet Express angled to the rail in the stretch, surging past a fading Schoolyard Dreams. The gray Afleet Again gave good chase from the middle of the track, but could not get to the winner. The final time was 1:45.44.
Afleet Express is the seventh stakes winner, 12th stakes horse, and fifth Graded stakes winner from the first crop by Afleet Alex, all numbers that are tops in his siring crop. Afleet Alex reigns as the Leading Second Crop Sire of 2010.
Afleet Express was sold at the 2008 Keeneland January all-ages sale for $245,000, and is owned in partnership by Gainesway and Martin L. Cherry. The dark bay colt's record now stands at 3-1-0 in five starts, with earnings of $185,140 after the $120,000 Pegasus winner's check.
The more experienced Afleet Again, who is owned by Cash Is King Stable, is 3-2-3 in 12 starts, for earnings of $227,950.
Afleet Alex 2-year-old places in Italian Group 3
Avatar Day, a 2-year-old colt by Afleet Alex, finished second on Sunday, June 20 in the Premio Primi Passi (G3) at San Siro racetrack in Italy. The Passi, Italy's first graded race of the year for juveniles, was run at six furlongs over turf course labeled soft.
Avatar Day is out of Investagain, who is a half-sister to the Grade 2 winner Investalot.
Gainesway consigned and sold Avatar Day at the 2009 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale, where he was purchased by Arapahoe Farm.
