Led by six-figure yearlings of both sexes, Afleet Alex continued his strong 2010 performance, posting the third best average of all sires at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Sale.
Only Medaglia d’Oro (stud fee $100,000) and Unbridled’s Song (stud fee $115,000) posted higher averages than Afleet Alex, whose yearlings averaged $170,000.
Top price for his progeny was the $210,000 trainer Bruce Levine paid for his son out of Minister’s Deputy, by Deputy Minister. Consigned by Emilie Fojan and Troy Rankin’s Bona Terra Stud, the colt has been a standout from the start, according to his breeder, and the mare is back in foal to Afleet Alex for 2011. “I love Afleet Alex, and I love Deputy Minister mares,” Fojan told TDN. “We bred her back to Afleet Alex, because this horse was so nice. He’s totally like the sire—he’s tenacious. He’s a big, huge, stout thing. He’s a January baby, and he’s already broke. He’s going to be a nice horse. I train a few horses, too, and so I look for a very athletic horse. He was the kind of horse I wanted to keep!”
Just 11 hips earlier, Gainesway paid $130,000 for a daughter of Afleet Alex from the Frankfort Park Farm consignment. From a live, deep family, this filly has five major stakes-winning fillies in the first three dams, including champion Halfbridled, millionairess Lu Ravi, and new July 7th stakes winner Ravi’s Song.
The next Afleet Alex yearlings will be offered at the Saratoga Selected Sale (Hips 111 and 142) and Saratoga NY Preferred Sale (Hips 316 and 466).
