Afleeting Lady notched her first graded stakes win Saturday at Belmont Park, with the 5-year-old daughter of Afleet Alex drawing off to a 3 1/2-length victory the $150,000 Turnback the Alarm H (G3) (VIDEO
Afleeting Lady, winner of the $75,000 Lady's Secret S. at Monmouth Park in her previous start, is one of 10 stakes horses by her sire. A leading fourth-crop sire, Afleet Alex is also the sire of 2011 Breeders' Cup Marathon winner Afleet Again.
Making her first start for new owners Richard Santulli and Alpha Delta Stables, Afleeting Lady ran second behind All Due Respect carried through an opening quarter-mile in 23.39 seconds, with the half going in a brisk 46.17. Moving up willingly on the turn when asked by jockey Joel Rosario, the half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Shackleford drew alongside the pacesetter at the top of the stretch and edged away to hit the wire in 1:42.17 for 1 1/16 miles.
"That was an easy trip," Rosario said afterward "It looked like (All Due Respect) was the speed. My horse has speed, too, but I just let them go and let my horse get comfortable and she was really game today."
It was the second straight victory and third in six 2012 outings for Afleeting Lady, who is trained by Dale Romans. She is now 6-4-2 from 18 career starts with earnings of $374,822.
Bred by James M. Lauffer and W.D. Cubbedge in Kentucky, Afleeting Lady is one of five stakes winners produced by the stakes-placed Unbridled mare Oatsee. Shacklefor, runner-up in the 2011 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1), will contest that race once again next weekend at Santa Anita.
Oatsee's other stakes winners are Lady Joanne, victress of the Grade 1 Alabama S. in 2007; multiple Grade 3 winner Baghdaria; and her current three-year-old Stephanoatsee, who captured last Saturday's Barbaro S. at Delaware Park.
