With the victory, the 5-year-old daughter of Afleet Alex earned her first black-type score; previously, she finished second in the Fleur de Lis H. (G2) and Falls City H. (G2) both at Churchill Downs.
Afleeting Lady is one of 11 stakes horses in 2012 by Afleet Alex, who is a top 10 fourth-crop sire of stakes winners.
After breaking alertly and contesting the pace for the first five furlongs, Afleeting Lady took command around the far turn before opening up in the lane and drawing away from the field in the final furlong. Trained by Dale Romans, Afleeting Lady covered the mile and a sixteenth in 1:43 4/5
“Dale told me that she was a slow breaker and to make sure she ran away from there,” said winning jockey Chris DeCarlo. “We were able to get out of the gate well and then when we hit the first turn she was a little rank and I worried it would take away some of her run. She doesn’t have a big turn of foot, but she does have a big, long stride.”
Afleeting Lady is out of the Unbridled mare Oatsee, making her a half-sister to Preakness (G1) and Met Mile (G1) winner Shackleford. Afleeting Lady now sports a record of 5-4-2 from 18 career starts, good for earnings of $284,822. She races in the colors of her breeders James Lauffer and William Cubbedge.
