Hansen wins 2YO Male Eclipse Award

Monday, January 16, 2012 |
Hansen, the undefeated 2-year-old son of Tapit, was named 2-year-old male champion Eclipse Award winner at the 41st Eclipse Awards held Jan. 16 in Beverly Hills, Calif. Hansen received 194 first-place votes, well ahead of the 52 for Union Rags.

Hansen capped his perfect 3-for-3 campaign with a scintillating win in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at Churchill Downs. The nearly white colt debuted Sept. 9 at Turfway, rolling to a 12 1/4-length victory, then came back just two weeks later and bettered that performance with a 13 1/4-length score in the $100,000 Kentucky Cup Juvenile.

Hansen was bred by Dr. Kendall Hansen, for whom he is also named. Dr. Hansen is co-owner of the colt with Sky Chai Racing.

Hansen, trained by Mike Maker, is based in south Florida and is being pointed to the Holy Bull S. at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 29 for his 3-year-old debut and could well return to Turfway Park for the Spiral S. (G3) later in the spring.

Hansen capped off a stellar year for Tapit, who finished third on the North American General Sire List with $9,229,483 in progeny earnings. Tapit sired 13 stakes winners, 31 stakes horses in 2011, with other top performers including the 2-time Grade 1 winning filly Zazu, Hawthorne Gold Cup (G2) winner Headache; Joyful Victory, winner of the Grade 2 Fantasy S.; and True North H. (G2) winner Trappe Shot.
