North America's leading second-crop sire Afleet Alex added his first Japanese bred stakes winner to his impressive resume on Aug. 22. His 3-year-old daughter Bitter Sweet, in her stakes debut, won the Macau Jockey Club S. at Sapporo Racecourse to run her record to 3-0-2 in eight starts. She ran the about distance of 1 1/16-miles in 1:45.30
Bitter Sweet has earned $371,860 for owner/breeder Sakuri Farm. She is the first foal out of her dam Moonlight Gardens, who won four of seven lifetime starts. The mare's family is laden with stakes winners and several horses with lengthy and successful careers, topped by Major Adversary, who won 10 stakes and made an incredible 87 lifetime starts.
Afleet Alex has been near or on top of the second-crop sire list for the entire year. The dual-classic winner has progeny earnings of $2.7 million. Bitter Sweet is his seventh stakes winner of the year, also tops among sophomore sires.
