Congressional Page had been knocking on the stakes door this spring, and his earlier efforts led to his breakthrough victory in the $100,000 Decathlon S. on May 22, opening day at Monmouth Park.

Prior to the Decathlon, Congressional Page was second in both the Commonwealth S. (G2) at Keeneland and the Gulfstream Park Sprint Championship (G2), and is one of eight stakes horses sired by Champion Orientate in 2010. The same day as the Decathlon, Orientate sired two-year-old stakes filly Purple Glow (Ire), runner-up to a colt in the Marble Hill Stakes in Ireland. Orientate's leading earner for 2010 is Greenspring, who set a 7-furlong track record winning the Grade 2 General George H. at Laurel Park.

The Decathlon is part of the lucrative 2010 Monmouth Park meet, with the big purses expected to draw top-class barns and jockeys from across the country. And the first stake of the meet was no exception; all seven horses in the Decathlon had previously won stakes. Congressional Page was content to let the front-runners duke it out early in the six furlong contest. He was sixth after a quarter mile, but only 2 1/2-lengths from the lead. Three-wide around the turn and into the stretch, he was still three lengths behind an eighth mile from the wire. Carlos Marquez, Jr. swung him out to take over and finish three-quarters ahead of Mr. Fantasy, with Go Go Shoot another two lengths back in third. The final time was 1:09 2/5.

Congressional Page is now 6-2-1 in 11 starts. The Decathlon victory was worth $55,000, raising his lifetime mark to $309,680 for owner Larry R. Johnson. He is trained by Michael Trombetta. Johnson purchased Congressional Page at the 2006 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky summer yearling sale.
