Buccella made a strong stretch move to break her maiden by 1 3/4-lengths Aug. 21 at Monmouth Park, giving her sire Corinthian his third winner from his first crop. Corinthian is in the top 20 among all freshman sires in terms of earnings, and his yearling sales average of $79,354 is fourth-best for first year stallions.
Buccella stalked in third for the first half-mile of the 5 1/2-furlongs, then went three wide to gain the lead in the final eighth-mile to edge away late.
The 2-year-old filly is owned by JMJ Racing Stable, who also bred the filly in Kentucky with several partners. She has earned $18,540 in two lifetime starts.
