Fresh off of his amazing accomplishment of siring two Classic winners from his first crop, Birdstone followed it up by being a commercial hit at the annual Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Selected Yearling Sale, as his lone offering at the sale – a colt – commanded $400,000 from Darley purchaser John Ferguson during the first session of the two-day event July 20-21 in Lexington.
Selling as Hip No. 228, the gorgeous dark bay colt strutted into the sales ring and quickly drew the crowd’s full attention. After a flurry of activity, the bidding stopped at the session-high price for consignors Dapple Stud, agent.
The colt hails from the Seattle Slew mare Slew Smarts, who has a stakes-placed performer by fellow Gainesway stallion Whywhywhy. Por Que, the mare’s lone starter, is a multiple stakes-placed winner of $115,759.
