The last time Gainesway Stable’s Starfish Bay had been seen sprinting on the turf she set a course record at Monmouth Park. On August 19th, the lightning-quick 3-year-old filly tried her niche sprinting on the grass against stakes company and passed with flying colors, impressively winning the $70,000 From New York to Old York S. at Saratoga.
Under Edgar Prado, Starfish Bay flashed her quality speed right out of the gate. She blitzed through fractions of 21.27, 44.63 while opening up a clear lead into the stretch after a crisp five furlongs in 56.44 over a local course listed as ‘good’. The daughter of Elusive Quality showed her class in the drive to the wire, opening up to a clear advantage inside the final half-furlong. Prado confidently allowed Starfish Bay to finish up the last part of the race on her own will, as she crossed the wire an easy winner by a length and three-quarters.
The final time for 5 ½ furlongs was 1:02.69, and Starfish Bay earned $43,470 for her first career stakes triumph. She is trained by Todd Pletcher and now owns three wins from six starts lifetime with earnings of $99,040.
Gainesway also bred the speedy filly out of the Grade 2-winning Not For Love mare Touch Love.
