Gainesway filly tops Session 1 of Keeneland yearling sale

A filly consigned by Gainesway sales brought a session-high price of $1,500,000 during day 1 of the Keeneland September Yearling sale Sept. 9 in Lexington. Watch the Blood-Horse video interview with Michael Hernon, Gainesway Director of Sales, following the sale of the filly here.

The bay filly by Medaglia d'Oro, hip No. 19, is out of Flying Passage, a daughter of A.P. Indy who is the dam of multiple Grade 2 winner Hungry Island as well as the Grade 3 winner Soaring Empire.

The winning bidder was Alan Cooper, on behalf of the Niarchos family. A video of the filly in the auction ring can be seen here.

"We've only just bought her, so give us time to work out where she's going to go, but she's going to go to Europe," Cooper said. "We know the family, and it comes from a top, top breeder in Emory (Hamilton) and her family. If you're going to try to buy a potential blue hen mare, you have to pay."
