Buddy’s Saint, an emerging 2-year-old star and Gainesway Sales yearling graduate, exploded onto the 2010 Triple Crown scene with an eye-grabbing 12-length romp in the $150,000 Nashua S. (G2) at Aqueduct on Nov. 7th.
A son of the late Saint Liam, Buddy’s Saint broke the race wide open heading into the far turn and poured it on in the lane, drawing off impressively to hit the wire a dozen lengths the best. The final time for a mile was 1:35.67 over a fast track.
The bay colt was consigned by Gainesway at the 2008 Keeneland September sale and sold for $100,000. Trained in New York by Bruce Levine, Buddy’s Saint broke his maiden in the Nashua, which was his first stakes win in his first try. He finished on top at the wire his debut on Sept. 26 at Belmont, but was disqualified and placed second. Despite still being a maiden, he returned to dominate in his second start on Saturday, instantly making him a contender for the Classics at three.
Buddy’s Saint earned $90,000 for the win to move his bankroll to $98,600 for owner Kingfield Stables. The colt was bred in Kentucky by Roy Gottlieb & Morton Fink from the stakes-winning Blushing John mare Tuzia.
