Gainesway sales consignments produced two of the top five finishers in the $2,000,000 Kentucky Derby (G1).
Keeneland September yearling graduate Paddy O'Prado ran third, less than 2 1/2 lengths behind the winner. Making his dirt debut, Paddy O'Prado posted a sparkling effort, coming from far back in the field of 20 to just miss second by a neck. The son of El Prado was bred in Kentucky by Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC, and is now owned by Donegal Racing. Trainer Dale Romans signed the ticket for him in 2008.
Just 2 1/4 lengths behind Paddy O'Prado was Keeneland November Sale graduate Noble's Promise. A Grade I winner and Eclipse finalist at two, Noble's Promise was jostled at the start of the Derby, but gained excellent position and "took control, well within himself," with a quarter mile to go. He raced with the winner well into the stretch, before giving way late to finish fifth. In two other starts this year, Noble's Promise lost a head-bob in the Rebel (G2) and ran a good fifth following a horrible trip in the Arkansas Derby (G1). Bred in Kentucky by C. & B. Kidder and Nancy Cole, he is owned by Chasing Dreams Racing and is trained by Kenny McPeek.
Gainesway Sales had the best overall finish of any consignor.
