Led by two Grade 1 performances at Belmont and a new Grade 2 victory in Illinois, Gainesway graduates had a Super Saturday on October 2nd.
The new Grade 2 winner was Redding Colliery, tenacious winner of the $250,000 Hawthorne Gold Cup. A G3 winner and track record-setter earlier this season, the 4-year-old son of Mineshaft was favored in the field of eight who went postward for the long-time Hawthorne feature. Already a winner in three of his five 2010 starts, Redding Colliery charged right to the front and never looked back, winning his third stakes at his third track this year. Redding Colliery was bred by Gainesway Thoroughbreds Ltd. and 707Stables, and sold at the 2007 Keeneland September Sale for $170,000. Racing for Mrs. Fitriani Hay and trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, he sports a record of 14-6-2-1 and $578,176.
At Belmont, Gainesway graduate Riley Tucker earned his first Grade 1 performance, running second in the $350,000 Vosburgh S. (G1). The 2010 Churchill Graded stakes winner came four-wide with great courage, but could not catch victorious Girolamo. A $375,000 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling, Riley Tucker was bred by Formal Gold Syndicate, and races for Zayat Stables and trainer Steve Asmussen. He has compiled a record of 28-6-7-4 and $578,176, with 11 stakes wins/placings.
Later that day at Belmont, 3-year-old millionaire Paddy O’Prado tackled older Grade 1 runners in the $500,000 Joe Hirsch Invitational Classic (G1), and was just passed in the shadow of the wire by late-running 5-year-old Winchester. Racing for the first time over the yielding Belmont turf course and as the only sophomore in the field, Paddy O’Prado acquitted himself admirably, and brought his overall record to 12-4-3-3 and $1,451,297. He was bred by Winchell Thoroughbreds, and sold for $105,000 at the 2008 Keeneland September Sale.
Gainesway Sales has produced 48 stakes horses of 2010, including 19 stakes winners, 10 Group/Graded stakes winners. Only two consignors, selling nearly twice as many horses, have produced more Graded winners this year.
