Afleet Alex's 3-year-old daughter Joyce's Angel broke her maiden in fine style at Tampa Bay Downs on Apr. 3, coming from second-to-last in the ten-horse field to win the seven furlong race by one length.
Afleet Alex is currently North America's leading second-crop sire, with progeny earnings in excess of $700,000 and two stakes winners to his credit, plus the top sophomore colt Dublin.
Similar to her Feb. 27 debut, when she was second, Joyce's Angel dropped towards the back of the pack soon after the start. Confidently ridden by Rosemary Homeister, Jr, the bay filly began to advance around the turn, moving between foes in the stretch to take a lead she wouldn't relinquish. With the win, Joyce's Angel has a first and second in two starts.
Joyce's Angel garnered some media attention even before she raced after one of her part-owners, Ron Hershey, named her after a young relative, Joyce DeVogel, who passed away from cancer last November. Hershey is a member of Fantasy Lane Stable, who are also the owners of Triple Crown prospect Uptowncharlybrown.
