Hard-fought win for Joyful Victory at Fair Grounds

Saturday, February 11, 2012 |

Joyful Victory lives up to her name in the Tiffany Lass S.
After a thrilling stretch duel, Joyful Victory proved the best by a half-length in Fair Grounds' $75,000 Tiffany Lass S. on Feb. 11. The 4-year-old Tapit filly was passed in mid-stretch by Ravi's Song, but fought back along the inside to retake the lead and claim the win.

“I knew Ravi’s Song was coming with a head of momentum and I’ve never seen this mare get in that kind of position,” said winning trainer Larry Jones, “but I was very proud to see (Joyful Victory's) second effort to come back and she gutted it out. It was a good effort. At Oaklawn (last year) whenever she got the lead, she’d be gone.”

Joyful Victory, who races for Rick Porter’s Fox Hill Farm, increased her earnings to $240,068 with her fourth career victory in 10 lifetime starts, including wins in the Oaklawn’s Grade 2 Fantasy S. and Grade 3 Honeybee S. last winter.

Bred in Ontario by William D. Graham, Joyful Victory is out of the Wild Again mare Wild Lucy Black. Tom McGreevy, agent for Fox Hill, purchased the Fantasy winner for $140,000 at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton Florida select sale of 2-year-olds in training.

Tapit is once again a top-10 North American sire. Tapizar, winner of the Grade 2 San Fernando S. in January, is his leading earner this year. He also had leading 2012 Kentucky Derby (G1) candidate Hansen, who will make his next start on the Triple Crown trail in Aqueduct's Grade 3 Gotham S. on March 3.
