Kensei, a $300,000 Barretts 2-year-old, became the latest promising 3-year-old colt by Gainesway stallion Mr. Greeley to impress in his seasonal debut, winning a $38,000 allowance race April 2 at Oaklawn Park.

Trained by Steve Asmussen for Stonestreet Stables and Gulf Coast Farms, Kensei stalked the early pace before showing his class in the stretch, splashing home to win by three-quarters of a length under Robby Albarado over a sloppy Oaklawn main track. The final time for the six-furlong event was 1:12.12.

Last summer, Kensei broke his maiden at first asking at Saratoga and competed in the Futurity (G2) at Belmont in his second start. He joins impressive Gulfstream maiden winner Kinsella as 3-year-old colts by Mr. Greeley who have recently made impressive seasonal debuts. Last month, Kinsella, a $2.2 million Saratoga Select Yearlings sale topper, overcame trouble to circle the field en route to a stylish win in his first career start at Gulfstream Park.
