Tapit’s stellar first crop got even better Friday, June 5th when Malibu Beach made a triumphant stakes debut by winning the $65,000 Alyssum S. at Belmont, becoming her sire’s eighth stakes winner from a championship first crop.
Ridden by Ramon Dominguez, Malibu Beach dictated terms early and ran resiliently on the lead, turning back the favored Reforestation in the stretch to win by three parts-of-a-lengths on the line. The final time was 1:17.12 for 6 ½ furlongs over a fast local main track.
Trained by Steve Klesaris, the 3-year-old gray or roan filly captured her second straight win from three lifetime starts. Just two weeks prior, Malibu Beach impressively broke her maiden at Delaware Park. Her Alyssum win moved her earnings to $71,000 for owner Puglisi Racing, LLC. Bridle Breezes bred the filly in Kentucky from the Copelan mare McCaskill. Klesaris purchased her on behalf of Puglisi Racing for $130,000 last year as a 2-year-old at Fasig-Tipton.
