With her victory in the Swirlaway S. Nov. 17 at Aqueduct, Miss Valentine became the 10th stakes winner of the year for Afleet Alex, who is the nation's leading second-crop sire with over $4.25 million in progeny earnings. His stakes winners, and their 12 stakes wins, are also tops among sophomore stallions.
Two-year-old Miss Valentine is now two-for-two in her young career. She broke her maiden Oct. 28 at Belmont Park. In the Swirlaway, the chestnut filly sat unhurried in sixth place through the first three-quarters of a mile before launching her bid as the field came into the stretch. She responded in earnest to jockey Ramon Dominguez, picking off foes one-by-one to strike the lead about a sixteenth of a mile from the wire. The winning margin in the one-mile main track event was a neck, in a time of 1:39.80.
Trained by Christophe Clemente for owner/breeder Waterville Lake Stables, Miss Valentine earned $36,000 for the victory, increasing her lifetime bankroll to $61,800.
