Miss Valentine all heart in Mom's Command S. win

Wednesday, September 28, 2011 |
Afleet Alex's Miss Valentine emerged a narrow winner in the $60,000 Mom's Command S. Sept. 28 at Belmont Park after a spirited stretch-long duel in the one mile main track contest. This was the third stakes victory for 3-year-old filly who has been worse than second only once in her career.

Miss Valentine was last of six for the first five furlongs before going three wide into the turn. Still well off the rail at the quarter pole, she hooked up with Draw It and the pair raced into the lane as one. There was no give in either filly from that point, but Miss Valentine proved best on the line to finish in 1:36.83 over a fast track.

The win raised Miss Valentine's overall mark to 4-4-0 from nine starts, including stakes wins in the $60,000 Swirlaway at Aqueduct and the $76,000 Serena's Song at Monmouth Park. She has now earned $220,800 for owner/breeder Waterville Lake Stables Limited LLC.

The New York bred filly is out of Miss Yiayia, who placed in five stakes and earned $175,970. She is a daughter of Apple Blossom H. winner Miss Baja.

Afleet Alex currently ranks sixth on the third-crop sire list, with progeny earnings of nearly $3 million. His leading earner for the year is Harissa, winner of the Grade 2 Barbara Fritchie H.
