Mr. Greeley colt breaks maiden in Golden Gate stakes

Sunday, September 12, 2010 |
Acaffella, a 2-year-old colt by Gainesway stallion Mr. Greeley, broke his maiden in style with a six-length victory in the 1 1/16-mile Angel Island S. at Golden Gate Fields on Sept. 11. The Richard Mandella trainee was second in his debut Aug. 25 at Del Mar.

Mr. Greeley has five stakes winners to his credit in 2010, with six overall stakes victories. Besides Acaffella, the group includes another 2-year-old, Laughing Lashes, a Group 2 winner in Ireland.

The Angel Island winner showed his professionalism in what was also his first start on the main track. Content to sit in fifth for the first half-mile, Acaffella launched his bid midway around the far turn. The 7-5 favorite went three wide into the stretch and opened up by three lengths very quickly. Russell Baze wrapped up his mount at that point to coast to the wire.

Acaffella's record now stands at 2-1-1-0, with earnings of $40,750 for owner Spendthrift Farm. He was bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC. Spendthrift acquired Acaffella as a yearling at the 2009 Keeneland September sale, where they signed the ticket for $200,000.

Acaffella is the latest of three foals out of Special Ballad, all of whom are winners. Special Ballad is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Twilight Time.
