Smoke Glacken's On Fire Baby topped off a terrific Churchill Downs fall meet with a 6 1/4-length win in the $150,000 Golden Rod S. (G2) on Nov. 26. Four weeks earlier, the 2-year-old filly kicked off the meet at the Louisville track with a win in the Grade 3 Pocahontas S. On Fire Baby is Smoke Glacken's leading earner of 2011 and one of eight stakes horses by the Gainesway stallion.
On Fire Baby went right to the front in the Golden Rod, with jockey Joe Johnson holding his filly to a measured one length lead after a half-mile in a modest 50 seconds. Hitting the top of the lane, On Fire Baby sprinted away from the field to leave nothing in doubt except the winning margin. The final time for the 1 1/16 miles was 1:45.98.
“You saw today how good she is and I think she’s got plenty left in her,” winning trainer Gary Hartlage said. “When she got away with that kind of a half (mile), I didn’t think she would get beat if she was the horse I thought she was and she did her thing. In my opinion, she’s one of the top three 2-year-old fillies in the country.”
“The plan was to break and go on with her,” Johnson said. “When we broke, no one was really gunning for it (the lead), so I took advantage of it and when I called on her to run, she responded. She was very professional today.”
“We’re nominated to the Kentucky Oaks now and we’ll also nominate her to the Kentucky Derby (G1),” Hartlage added. “I’m telling you, she is that good.”
The Golden Rod victory was worth $99,747 and increased On Fire Baby’s earnings to $227,329 with a record of 3-0-0 in four starts. She is owned and bred by Anita Cauley.
