On Fire Baby smokes foes in G3 Pocahontas S.

Smoke Glacken's On Fire Baby rallied strongly in the stretch to win the Grade 2, $173,400 Pocahontas S. for 2-year-old fillies by three-quarters of a length on opening day of the fall meet at Churchill Downs.

Ridden by Joe Johnson for trainer Gary Hartlage, On Fire Baby stalked on the inside in mid-pack of the 12 horse field during the early stages of the one-turn contest. At the three-sixteenths pole, Johnson moved On Fire Baby off the rail and safely held off the late charge of And Why Not. On Fire Baby ran the mile on a fast main track in 1:37.17 and got a lifetime-best Beyer Speed Figure of 81.

“This feels good. She’s always showed me she was a good horse from the day she stepped in the barn and that’s why I ran her in a Grade 1 (Alcibiades S., where she was a close fifth) and today a Grade 2. I’ve trained a lot of good horses and some graded stakes winners and she’s right up there with them. She’ll be even better next year when she really figures out what’s going on. If we run her one more time this year it would be in the (Grade 2) Golden Rod (at Churchill Downs on Nov. 26), but we’ll see how she comes out of this race.”

Owned and bred in Kentucky by Anita Aubrey, On Fire Baby increased her earnings to $127,582 from a record of 2-0-0 in three starts. She is out of Ornate and is a half-sister to High Heels, winner of the Grade 2 Fantasy S., and the listed winning filly French Kiss.
