She was one of three winners on the day for Champion Smoke Glacken, and becomes the 14th Graded stakes winner of his career. She is also the second 2011 stakes winner by her sire in the past 14 days.
Quantum Miss dueled with Roman Treasure through an opening quarter of 22.49, began to pull away from that rival nearing the quarter-pole, and resisted a late bid from Coax Liberty.
“She went a little fast the first part of the race,” said winning jockey Cornelio Velasquez. “I tried to relax her, but I had enough horse at the end.”
“I was very impressed,” said Tony Dutrow, who trains Quantum Miss for owner/breeder Daniel M. Ryan. “She broke right on top, took the worst of it along the backstretch, and held off what looked like a very good field.”
Dutrow said Quantum Miss will likely remain in sprints, with the Grade 1, six-furlong Prioress at Belmont Park on July 4 serving as a target.
“Her performance kind of confirms what we thought all long: she’s a six-furlong filly,” said Dutrow. “We’re thinking about eventually running her in the Prioress, with something else in between.”
The Cicada was the second stakes victory for Quantum Miss, who won the Blue Mountain S. at Penn National by a whopping 16 lengths on November 24. Overall, she is 3-0-1 from 5 starts with $150,750 in earnings.
Smoke Glacken has sired 46 stakes winners and earners of well over $39-million to date. His average earnings per starter of $71,794 ranks him among the top 2% of all sires. Smoke Glacken is standing the 2011 season for $10,000 live foal.
