Regally bred Tapit filly impresses in debut

Saturday, March 29, 2014 |
La Madrina, a 3-year-old filly by Tapit and a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Verrazano, showed her heels to her foes en route to a 6 1/2-length victory in her career debut Saturday at Gulfstream Park (VIDEO).

Owned by her breeder Emory Hamilton and trained by Shug McGaughey, the gray or roan filly came rolling from seventh place after a half-mile, bounding by the front-runners in the stretch with huge strides. Drawing away with ease in the final furlong, La Madrina stopped the timer in 1:22.98 for the seven furlongs.

La Padrina is out of Enchanted Rock, a daughter of Giant's Causeway, who is a half-sister to Grade 2 winners Waldoboro and Tara Roma. In addition to Wood Memorial (G1) and Haskell I. (G1) winner Verrazano, Enchanted Rock is also the dam of Grade 2 Risen Star S. winner El Padrino.
