Small Kitchen heats up Fair Grounds in debut

Thursday, February 02, 2012 |
Small Kitchen's emphatic debut maiden win Feb. 2 at Fair Grounds (VIDEO) was a big victory in many ways for Gainesway: the farm bred and owns the filly, and she is by their young stallion Corinthian, who was a top 10 freshman sire of 2011 and is in the top 5 on this year's second-crop list.

Small Kitchen was right in the tussle from the outset of the six furlong dash, with a trio of runners just a length apart after a quarter mile in a very quick :21.57 seconds. Going three-wide on the turn, the bay filly poked her nose in front two furlongs from the finish. The speed duel took its toll on the other front-runners, but Small Kitchen continued to pour it on, winning by 5 3/4-lengths in 1:10.95 on a fast track.

The victory was worth $22,608 for the daughter of Banshee Girl. Small Kitchen is the first foal out of her dam, who is a half-sister to $1.2 million earner Hagino Bel Tempo and Gallant Serenade S. winner Shore Breeze.
