Western Smoke, a 2-year-old colt by reigning Top 10 Juvenile Sire Smoke Glacken, dazzled in his debut on April 16th at Keeneland, drawing off to a 5 ¼-length victory in a $50,000 maiden special weight heat over the local Polytrack.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, Western Smoke broke on top and flashed sharp speed down the backstretch under Shaun Bridgmohan. The gray colt sprung off the far turn and opened up on the field in the stretch to be an easy winner. He hit the wire in 51.27 seconds for 4 ½ furlongs.
Bred by Hopewell Investments LLC from the Boston Harbor mare Echo Harbor, Western Smoke earned $31,180 for owner Kirk Robinson. The performance was one of the finest of the Keeneland Spring Meet by a juvenile and could propel the promising colt towards a start in the Kentucky Juvenile S. (G3) on April 30th at Churchill Downs.
