Tap It Rich strikes big in MSW debut at Santa Anita

Saturday, October 12, 2013 | Tapit
Tapit earned his third TDN Rising Star of 2013 on Saturday when 2-year-old Tap It Rich rolled to an eye-opening 4 1/4-length maiden special weight victory at Santa Anita Park (VIDEO).

2013 has been another stellar year for the progeny of Tapit, with earnings surpassing the $7 million mark, led by Grade 1 winner Joyful Victory.

After hopping at the start, the Bob Baffert-trained gray or roan found himself in eighth around the first turn of the one-mile contest. Mike Smith had his mount four wide down the backstretch, steadily advancing to fourth by the time the field hit the far turn.

Full of run coming into the stretch, Tap It Rich swept passed the leaders and still had plenty left in the final furlong, finishing the mile in 1:36.78. The time was good for a superlative Beyer Speed Figure of 89, the third highest number for any 2-year-old going a mile or over this year.

The morning after the win, Baffert told HRTV that Tap It Rich was a likely starter in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), to be run Nov. 2 at Santa Anita.

The winner is owned by Fog City Stable, who bought SF Bloodstock LLC Kentucky-bred for $510,000 out of the 2012 Keeneland September Yearling sale, where he was consigned by Gainesway. Tap It Rich is out of the Mr. Prospector mare Gold Canyon and is a half-brother to Grade 2 Lane's End S. winner Adriano.
