Tapajo garners second straight stakes score

Saturday, June 02, 2012 | Tapit
Tapajo tuned up for the $200,000 Iowa Oaks (G3) with an eye-catching 6 1/4-length tally in the $60,000 The Panthers S. on June 2 at Prairie Meadows. The gray/roan 3-year-old is one of seven stakes winners this year for Tapit, North America's second leading sire by worldwide earnings, with nearly $5 million already on the year.

Tapajo set a moderate pace of :47.53 for the half mile, and was up a length while under a mild hold from Alex Birzer. She began to increase her margin coming into the stretch, and the rest of the field could not keep up with the 4-5 as she coasted across the finish line to get the one mile in 1:38.79.

Owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds, who also campaigned Tapit, Tapajo is now 3-1-1 in seven starts. She is a two-time stakes winner at the current Prairie Meadows meet, having taken the $60,000 Goldfinch S. on April 20. Her bankroll stands at $116,727.

Tapajo was bred in Kentucky by Dr. J.K. and Linda Griggs.
