Making her way between horses in mid-stretch, Tapajo drew off to confident 1 1/4-length victory in the $60,000 Goldfinch S. April 20 at Prairie Meadows, the stakes debut for the 3-year-old Tapit filly.
Tapajo was making her sixth start in as many different tracks in the six furlong Goldfinch. Sent off the 3-2 favorite, the gray/roan filly was tucked in behind horses along the rail for most of the trip. Jockey Alex Birzer finally found a clear path at the furlong marker, and Tapajo powered through to hit the finish in 1:10.14 over the fast track.
In her travels, Tapajo broke her maiden at Churchill Downs in late Nov., and faced the likes of the undefeated Princess Arabella at Santa Anita earlier this year. In her most recent start at Oaklawn Park, she was second to Nurse Goodnight, who she beat in the Goldfinch.
Owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds, Tapajo is now 2-1-1 in six starts, earning $80,727. Winchell purchased Tapajo for $70,000 at last June's OBS Horses of Racing Age sale.
