Running Tap proved he could handle adversity with a stylish win in his debut at Saratoga on Aug. 19. The 2-year-old colt by Gainesway's Tapit has been training at the upstate New York track since early June for conditioner George Weaver.
In the 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight sprint, the gray or roan colt was in third while well off the rail down the backstretch, and was still in the four path when he made his move towards the leaders on the turn. With a determined stretch run, he hit the front at the furlong marker, then drew clear to win by 2 1/2-lengths. The final time over the fast track was 1:06 flat.
Gainesway consigned Running Tap to the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale, where he was purchased for $90,000 by current owners Jim and Susan Hill. Running Tap is out of Wild Flo, who is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Diplomat Lady and Grade 2 winner Dream Play.
Running Tap is the fifth juvenile winner by Tapit since July 30th, coming on the immediate heels of Del Mar maiden special victress Tell a Kelly (Aug. 15), Monmouth maiden special victor Printing Press (Aug. 8) and Laurel maiden special winner Bandbox (Aug. 8).
Tapit is currently ranked third on the North American third-crop sire list. His colts have performed particularly well this season, with Concord Point winning the West Virginia (G2) and Iowa (G3) Derbys; and Trappe Shot winning the Long Branch S. then running second in the Haskell (G1).
