Making his two-turn debut, Gainesway sales graduate Concord Point motored to an 8 ½-length victory and set a new track record in the $250,000 Iowa Derby (G3) on June 26. He was one of three Tapit stakes horses over the weekend, and becomes the 16th stakes winner, seventh graded winner, from the first two crops by the Champion Sire.
A 3-year-old gray or roan trained by Bob Baffert, Concord Point was making his first start outside of California, his first around two turns, and his first on conventional dirt. Under Classic-winning reinsman Martin Garcia, Concord Point tracked the leaders for a half, took command on the second turn, and poured it on through the stretch. He sped past the mile marker in 1:34.08, nearly a full second faster than the track record, and his final time of 1:40.37 broke the track record by 2/5 of a second. The performance earned the colt a 107 Beyer Speed Figure - second
fastest by a 3-year-old thus far in 2010 behind only Eskendereya's
Wood Memorial.
Concord Point was bred in Kentucky by Lee McMillan and Ed Rudley, and was sold by Gainesway at the Keeneland September Sale for $220,000. Racing for Kaleem Shah--who purchased the colt privately after he broke his maiden by daylight as a 2-year-old--Concord Point has a record of 3-1-0 in 5 starts, for earnings of $226,760.
Tapit’s other stakes horses of the weekend are Bobby Flay’s 3-year-old Triple Cream, third in the Boiling Springs S. (G3) at Monmouth, and Winchell Thoroughbred and Gainesway Thoroughbred’s stakes-winning 4-year-old Hightap, third in the $100,000 Iowa Distaff at Prairie Meadows.
Tapit has sired 14 stakes horses and earners of nearly $3,000,000 in 2010. Champion Freshman and Juvenile Sire with his first crop to race, Tapit now has 27 stakes horses and earners of nearly $12,000,000 from his first two crops. His third crop are 2-year-olds of 2010.
Gainesway Sales has already accounted for 31 stakes horses in 2010, 15 stakes winners, and eight Graded stakes winners. Gainesway Sales ranks second among all consignors by Graded stakes winners sold from yearling sales.
