Leading sire Tapit added a Derby winner to his sensational first-crop when his colt Testa Matta captured the near-$900,000 Japan Dirt Derby on June 8th at Ohi Racecourse.
Trained by local conditioner Akira Murayama, Testa Matta drew off to win the 1 ¼-mile Derby by two lengths on the wire over a field of 13 3-year-olds. The final time was 2:04.50.
The win marked Testa Matta’s third in a row since moving from the turf to the main track in May. The bay colt now owns four wins from eight starts and has amassed earnings of $843,942 for owner Kazumi Yoshida. He broke his maiden first-time out last October as a 2-year-old.
Testa Matta was bred in Kentucky by Waterford Farm from the Concern mare Difficult.
