Champion sire Tapit recorded his second Derby-winning colt from his first crop August 2nd when Endymion scored a length and three-quarter victory in the $100,000 Jersey Derby at Monmouth. Last month, Tapit’s son Testa Matta won the $900,000 Japanese Derby.

Saturday, Endymion tracked the early pace in the 1 1/16-mile event before moving to the lead turning for home and skipping clear of favorite Despite the Odds to prove best. The final time over a sloppy main track was 1:44.22, earning Endymion a 90 Beyer for his first career stakes triumph.

Trained by Christophe Clement, the bay colt moved his record to 3-1-2 from seven starts and improved his earnings to $128,255 for owner Peachtree Stable. Runner Ridge Inc. bred Endymion from the Shadeed mare Forever Young and sold him as a weanling for $210,000 at Keeneland November.
