A 2-year-old daughter of Tapit brought $750,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Florida sale of two-year-olds in training on March 3, second highest price of the south Florida auction. Tapit was also the sale's second leading sire overall by average ($515,000).
Through the first eight weeks of 2011, Tapit is the nation's second-leading sire, with eight stakes performers, five Group/Graded performers, and over $1,000,000 in progeny earnings. His 12 U.S. triple Crown nominees include the Grade 1 winning 3-year-old Zazu.
At FT Florida, Sheikh Mohammed’s bloodstock manager John Ferguson signed for the highly prized gray or roan filly, hip No. 64, from Stephens Thoroughbreds, agent for Vision Racing & Sales.
“I’ll tell you exactly what we liked about her,” Ferguson told the Blood-Horse. “The team has been here for a while and they’ve been watching her training. She is very professional. I love the way she moves on the racetrack. She just did everything right. She’s a really exciting filly by a top stallion.”
The filly worked an eighth of a mile in a blazing :9 4/5 during the auction’s under tack show on Monday. She is a full sister to Tempted to Tapit, who was second in the 2010 Risen Star S. (G2) and third in the Sunland Derby (G3).
"The price was great," said John Stephens, of Stephens Thoroughbreds and Vision Sales & Racing. "Truthfully, I thought compared to what people give for yearlings and based on how she performed that she might even go higher, but I sure can't complain."
Zazu's Santa Anita Oaks run sets her up for G1 Kentucky Oaks
Tapit's Zazu was a fast-closing second in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks on March 5, another strong showing for the gray 3-year-old filly. Coming from last after six furlongs, Zazu went three wide around the turn to just miss by a neck. And like she did in her recent victory in the Las Virgenes (G1), she galloped out full of run, suggesting the nine furlongs of the Kentucky Oaks (G1) should be much to her liking.
Trainer John Sadler agreed as he commented about future plans for the flashy filly, “She really ran well, so we’re really excited," he said. "She ran great, and she looks like she’ll be ready for the Kentucky Oaks. If the race were a little longer, she may have gotten there."
Zazu is 2-4-0 in 7 starts and has earned $290,985. Summerhill Equine LLC and Michael
Hernon bred Zazu in Kentucky, and Gainesway consigned her to the 2009
Keeneland September yearling sale, where David Ingordo bought her for
$285,000 for owners Jerry and Ann Moss.
