Tapit, the champion 2-year-old sire a year ago from his first crop, is at it again with his second group of juveniles, as his debutante Tapitsfly took the field wire-to-wire to score an impressive win in the $73,000 P G Johnson S. on Sept. 3rd at Saratoga.
Trying two turns and turf for the first time, Tapitsfly and jockey Robby Albarado broke running and took position on the front-end, setting fractions of 23.76 and a half in 48.75 over the firm local course. Coming off the far turn into the stretch, the gray filly received some challenges but responded with great resolve, turning back her rivals to kick clear in the final sixteenth of a mile and hit the wire 1 ¼ lengths on top. The final time was 1:42.08.
Trained by Dale Romans, Tapitsfly made her stakes debut a triumphant one after breaking her maiden in her previous start last month at the Spa. She increased her earnings to $96,642 for owner and breeder Frank Jones, Jr. Tapitsfly is out of the Marlin mare Flying Marlin.
The win gave Tapit 12 stakes winners and the first from his promising second crop.
