Ron Winchell went to $450,000 to secure a colt by Tapit, topping the Monday session at Keeneland on September 20.
The gray/roan yearling is a full brother to two stakes horses, including Graded stakes winner Touching Beauty, winner of the Comely S. (G3) this year, and second in the Matron (G2) as a two-year-old. Brookdale Sales consigned Hip 1942 for breeder Copper Penny Stables.
Winchell Thoroughbreds raced Tapit, and the operation has nearly 20 weanlings, yearlings and/or racehorses by the Champion Sire. Farm manager David Fiske commented on the sale, “He is a Tapit, and nobody likes Tapit more than we do…We seem to have a nearly insatiable appetite for Tapits.” Winchell said, “Tapit is obviously red hot right now, and the standouts seem to bring all the money. This one ranked the highest on our purchase wish list. I own half of his two-year-old full brother, Tapaway, and he is highly regarded—so that helped to move him up on the priority list.”
Tapit is America’s Leading Juvenile Sire this year, and ranks among the top 12 stallions overall by worldwide earnings.
