Tapit sits atop the 2010 juvenile sire list in earnings, stakes horses, stakes winners and winners, with the colt Bandbox becoming his first repeat juvenile stakes winner on the year with a comfortable victory in the $100,000 Sleepy Hollow S. Oct. 23 at Belmont Park.
Tapit also ranks in the top 15 on the 2010 General sire list, very impressive considering he has just three crops of racing age.
Bandbox, a gray/roan like his sire, was the 3-5 favorite in the seven furlong Sleepy Hollow. Ridden confidently by Dominguez after stumbling at the start, he settled in seventh place down the backstretch. He launched a five-wide bid as the field headed into the turn, picking off opponents one by one and striking the lead with a furlong left to run to win going away by 1 1/4-lengths. He completed the seven furlongs in 1:24.38.
Dominguez noted afterward that the budding star is learning as his career blossoms. “He stumbled a little bit at the start. As soon as he came back up, he was very relaxed for me and on the bridle,” Dominguez said. “I always felt like I had a lot of horse. When I chose to go around horses, I felt like I had much the best. Around the turn, he started to shy away from the others, but as soon as he was able to get ahead of them, he just relaxed for me, came forward, and did it pretty nicely.”
Trained by Rodney Jenkins for Hillwood Stable, Bandbox is pointing towards the $1 million Grade 3 Delta Jackpot on November 20 at Delta Downs. His record now stands at a perfect 3-for-3, with earnings of $133,680. Previously, he won the Charles Town Juvenile on Sept. 18 and broke his maiden at Laurel Park on Aug. 18.
Hillwood purchased Bandbox in 2009 at the Fasig-Tipton October select yearling sale. He was bred in New York by New Dawn Thoroughbreds and Aron Yagoda.
