Tapitsfly got up to take the Grade 1, $350,000 First Lady S. at Keeneland on Saturday, setting up the angular snow-gray filly for a possible run in the Breeders' Cup. Tapitsfly, with $715,453 in earnings this year, has helped put her sire Tapit in the top five on the 2012 General Sire List.
Tapitsfly was in fourth for most of the one-mile contest, before Jose Lezcano swung the Frank Jones, Jr. homebred four wide coming into the lane. Pacesetter Daisy Devine carried Tapitsfly even wider as those two hooked up at the eighth pole. The duo then drifted back towards the rail in the final strides, with Tapitsfly besting her foe by a half-length in 1:35.44 on the firm turf.
Tapitsfly prevails in Keeneland's G1 First Lady S.
“She has been a special filly,” said her trainer Dale Romans. “She’s probably going to retire at the end of this year. She’s going to have one or two more starts left so we’ve got to pick some place that’s going to count. The Breeders’ Cup is tough because for the fillies, she has to run so far (1 1/4 miles in the Grade 1 Filly & Mare Turf) unless we decide to put her in against the colts (in the Grade 1 Mile). But we’ve done sillier things.”
Tapitsfly earned her first Grade 1 when taking the Just a Game S. at Belmont Park on June 9. With Saturday's win she increased her earnings to $1,495,503. Her 24-7-6-4 career mark also includes victories in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and P.G. Johnson S. in 2009, and the Grade 2 Honey Fox S. at Gulfstream Park earlier this season.
