Tiree gets head bob in Coach Jimi Lee S.

Sunday, July 15, 2012 | Smoke Glacken

Smoke Glacken's Tiree won his stakes debut Saturday at Arlington Park, dueling his way to a nose victory in the $66,400 Coach Jimi Lee S. [VIDEO] for 3-year-olds. Smoke Glacken now has seven stakes winners in 2012, led by recent Canadian Grade 2 winner Smokey Fire and Honeybee S. (G3) winner On Fire Baby.

In the Jimi Lee, Tiree got out of the gate second best, just behind Arcade, who set solid early fractions of :23.69 and :47.11 for the opening quarter and half. The duo locked together at the head of the stretch and continued their battle right to the wire, with Tiree getting his nose down in a thrilling finish.

Ridden by Francisco Torres, Tiree completed the seven furlongs in 1:24.89.

Trainer Gerald Bennett complimented his runner in post-race interviews. "Hopefully we can (his undefeated season) going. He works good in the morning on the dirt."

Bennett trains Tiree for Harold Queen. Tiree is now 4-1-3 in nine starts, with earnings of $135,718. Queen bought Tiree for $95,000 at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale.
