Trappe Shot, a 3-year-old sale-topping colt by Tapit, dominated a $35,000 maiden special weight race at Gulfstream Park Feb. 21, winning by 10 1/4 lengths while stopping the timer in the six-furlong race in a very brisk 1:09 2/5 seconds. The performance earned him a very solid 88 Beyer Speed Figure, and the TDN labeled him as a Rising Star.
With Trappe Shot's win, the first two months of 2010 have proven very productive for Tapit's 3-year-old colts. In addition to Trappe Shot, Tempted to Tapit, who put up a Beyer figure of 100 in his January maiden race, and subsequently came back to run second in the Feb. 20 Risen Star (G3); and Testa Matta, winner of the Japanese Derby a year ago, ran second in the prestigious February S. in Tokyo Feb. 21.
Trappe Shot, who sold for a sales record $850,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton May auction, was always close to the very quick pace in Sunday's race. The chestnut colt traveled three wide around the turn to take command at the top of the stretch, then drew off to an easy victory. This was his first start since last July, when he checked in a troubled fifth in his debut at Saratoga.
Trappe Shot is out of Shopping, making him a half-brother to the Grade 1 winner and millionaire Miss Shop; the stakes winners Bought in Dixie and Shop Again; and graded stakes-placed Bulling. Trappe Shot has earned $22,650 for owner Mill House.
