Tricky Hat works magic to take $100K Laurel Turf Cup

Saturday, September 21, 2013 | Hat Trick
Tricky Hat got a crafty ride to emerge victorious in Saturday's $100,000 Laurel Turf Cup, giving his sire Hat Trick his ninth stakes horse of 2013. Hat Trick's top performers have propelled the Gainesway stallion into the top 20 on the 2013 Third Crop Sire list.

Co-owned by Gainesway along with Andrew Rosen and Bobby Trussell, Tricky Hat got a very patient ride from Rosie Napravnik, who kept the dark bay 4-year-old in the middle of the 13 horse field until the final turn.

When the field turned for home, Tricky Hat emerged from the pack along the rail, opened a short lead and held off late closer Eagle Poise to win by a neck in 2:30.44 for the 1 1/2-turf marathon (VIDEO).

“We had a great trip and he handled the wet turf well,” said Napravnik. “We were sitting in a good spot and I was able to get through on the inside. The horse was the class of the race.”

Tricky Hat, the first foal out of Tonichi, increased his bankroll to $161,324 with the $60,000 payday.
