Summer Bird
The progeny of Belmont Stakes winner Birdstone are following suit as Classic contenders, as a pair of his first-crop 3-year-olds – Mine That Bird and Summer Bird – are both being pointed for the May 2nd Kentucky Derby.

Mine That Bird, Canada’s Champion Juvenile from a year ago, will make his seventh consecutive stakes start – and biggest of his career – when he lines up in next month’s Derby. The bay gelding owns four wins from eights starts including wins in the Silver Deputy S., Swynford S. and Grey S. (G3) at two. He currently sits at 17th on the graded earnings list for the Derby with $138,705.

Summer Bird will enter the Derby fresh off a fast-closing third-place finish in the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G2) on April 11th. It was just the colt’s third start, and he earned a 99 Beyer Speed Figure for his eye-catching late rally. Summer Bird currently sits 20th on the list of graded earnings for the Derby with $100,000.

Birdstone has already sired four stakes winners from his debut crop, with three of those being graded stakes winners.
